Alex Lynn plans full sportscar switch in WEC LMP1 or GTE in 2017

Williams Formula 1 development driver Alex Lynn is targeting a full-time switch to sportscar racing in the World Endurance Championship next season

The Briton, who has already announced that last weekend's GP2 finale in Abu Dhabi would be his last start in the F1 feeder series, is aiming to make the change after contesting three rounds of the 2016 WEC in LMP2 with Manor and testing for Aston Martin Racing.

Lynn, 23, told Autosport: "Sportscars is what I want to do now.

"I've enjoyed my three races in the WEC, as well as the test with Aston Martin, and it is where I would like to stay.

"It's about getting an opportunity somewhere, hopefully in a factory team, and being paid to race.

"LMP1 or GTE is where I would like to be racing next year."

Asked if he thought he could land a role with one of the two remaining LMP1 manufacturers, Lynn replied: "It will all depend on how many cars the manufacturers run at Le Mans, and it doesn't take much to imagine which one I am targeting."

The last comment is a reference to Toyota and his links with mentor Alex Wurz, who has retained an advisory role with the Japanese manufacturer's WEC squad since his retirement from the cockpit.

Lynn drove a TS040 HYBRID at the official WEC rookie test in Bahrain one year ago and is also known to have been given at least one more run in a Toyota over last winter.

Toyota has yet to confirm that it will run three cars at Le Mans, while Porsche has hinted that there could be a change in its plan to run only two.

Lynn has also been linked to a role with champion Formula E team Renault e.dams next year.
