Antonio Felix da Costa joins Andretti for 2016/17 Formula E season

BMW DTM driver and Formula E race winner Antonio Felix da Costa will switch to the Andretti team in the electric series for the 2016/17 season

The Portuguese racer drove for the Aguri team for the first two seasons of FE, winning the third race of the inaugural season in 2014 in Argentina.

BMW is understood to be working on an engineering partnership with Andretti for next season's ATEC-002 powertrain, with its factory GT driver Alexander Sims carrying out some of the development work.

Team boss Michael Andretti said: "We're very excited to have Antonio join the team.

"I feel adding him is going to give us one of the strongest driver line-ups in the field.

"We've been watching Antonio over the last two seasons and I feel he has been very impressive on the racetrack.

"It will be great to be racing with him, instead of against him."

Da Costa joins Robin Frijns in Andretti's line-up, following the Dutchman's rookie campaign with the team last season.

While da Costa has previously prioritised DTM over FE in the event of a calendar clash, Autosport understands that could change for next season, particularly given BMW's increased involvement in the single-seater series.

"To join Andretti is a big thing for me," said da Costa.

"I have always loved the way Americans go racing, and how they do sports in general.

"I'm a big fan of IndyCar and, to me, Andretti Autosport has always been an iconic team.

"To finally be able to say that I'm joining and racing for this amazing team and family is a big deal.

"We have a great team in place, the car looks good and the people around me are super professional. I'm ready to get the season started."
