Esteban Guerrieri to make one-off WTCC apperance in Argentina
Argentinian Esteban Guerrieri will make his World Touring Car Championship debut at his home round at Termas de Rio Hondo next month
Guerrieri, who finished third in the Formula Renault 3.5 series in 2010 and was twice a runner-up in Indy Lights, has participated in Argentina's Super TC2000 championship since 2014 and has a victory and three podiums to his name.
The 31-year-old will switch touring car disciplines and make his WTCC debut in a second Campos Racing Chevrolet RML Cruze TC1 alongside regular driver John Filippi, increasing the grid size to 19 cars for the eighth round of the season.
"It's a great opportunity and to be part of an FIA world championship is not something that happens every day," said Guerrieri.
"I am very enthusiastic to have the chance to compete against the best.
"Many times in my career in Europe I had to jump into cars I never tested before and went straight to race weekends, and performed very well.
"These situations empower me even more."
Although his racing pedigree has largely been in single-seaters, Guerrieri said the exploits of his compatriot Jose Maria Lopez - who won during a one-off appearance in Argentina in 2013 and has dominated the championship since 2014 - made the WTCC more accessible for other South American drivers.
"Pechito [Lopez] has done an incredible job since he landed in the WTCC," he said.
"He showed his great talent and set the benchmark for everybody else.
"It is a positive to have a countryman performing like this, it can open doors for more Latin American drivers to come to the WTCC."
