Autosport to race in Renault Sport Trophy at Red Bull Ring F1 track

Autosport will contest the third round of the 2016 Renault Sport Trophy at the Red Bull Ring Formula 1 track this weekend, supporting the European Le Mans Series

Autosport's Grand Prix editor Ben Anderson will partner Canal F1 Latin America TV commentator (and former Autosport contributor) Diego Mejia in the #16 entry, run by French sportscar outfit Duqueine Engineering.

The Renault Sport Trophy is a single-make GT-type series, positioned between the French manufacturer's Clio Cup championships and professional categories such as the ELMS, World Endurance Championship and the DTM.

The series is split into sections for professional and amateur drivers, who share a car for an endurance race and two solo-driver sprint races across each of the championship's six race weekends.

The winner of the 'pro' championship gets a Super GT test in Japan, while the 'am' champion receives an LMP2 drive in the 2017 Le Mans 24 Hours.

This year's 'pro' championship is currently being fought out between ex-Formula Renault 3.5 race winner Kevin Korjus and former Red Bull junior driver and McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner Lewis Williamson, while 2004 Euro F3000 champion and FIA GT race winner Nicky Pastorelli, and Renault F1 development driver Carmen Jorda are also series regulars.

The winner of the inaugural 2015 championship for the 550bhp, V6 turbo-engined cars was Andrea Pizzitola, who is now a Renault/NISMO factory driver in LMP2.

His main title rival was Dutch racer Steijn Schothorst, who finished fifth in the second GP3 British Grand Prix support race at Silverstone last weekend.

Autosport's Anderson is a Formula Vee race winner with extensive experience of national racing in the UK, while Mejia was formerly Autosport's NASCAR correspondent and boasts success as an endurance driver with Renault in his native Colombia.

This weekend's Red Bull Ring race is the third round of the 2016 Renault Sport Trophy, which has already visited Aragon and Imola, and will also take in races at Paul Ricard, Spa and Estoril before the season concludes in October.
