Scott McLaughlin moves from Volvo to Penske for 2017 Supercars

Scott McLaughlin will move from Volvo to DJR Team Penske for the 2017 Supercars season

The New Zealand youngster stepped up to the championship with Garry Rogers Motorsport in 2013, the year before its alliance with Volvo started, after winning the second-tier Dunlop Series.

He has since secured eight race wins, the last two coming at Phillip Island in May, and is currently third in the 2016 standings.

The 23-year-old will partner Fabian Coulthard, who joined DJR Team Penske this year.

"This is a great opportunity for me to join one of the most accomplished Supercar teams in history and, hopefully, we can continue to grow together," McLaughlin said.

"I want to thank two absolute motorsport legends in Dick Johnson and Roger Penske for believing in me.

"I'm really excited about the future with the organisation."

Penske added the Australian programme to its empire last year, in a partnership with Johnson's long-running team, which had fallen on tougher times.

"We have watched Scott closely over the last few seasons and have admired his talent and his ability to get the best results out of his car week in and week out," Penske said.

"As we continue to raise the level of performance at DJR Team Penske we believe he will be a key addition to our team on and off the track."

Two-time champion Macros Ambrose was to originally spearhead the project, but found the going tough on his return from NASCAR and stepped out of the full-time seat after the first two events. He effectively retired after the 2015 endurance races.

Scott Pye, a DJR driver in 2014, stepped back in after Ambrose, but is now being squeezed out again to accommodate McLaughlin.

The shape of Garry Rogers Motorsport's 2017 programme is up in the air, following the decision of Volvo's motorsport arm Polestar to withdraw its support.
