Indy 500 Carb Day: Tony Kanaan fastest in final practice

Tony Kanaan led the final 'Carb Day' practice session ahead of the Indianapolis 500 as Ganassi showed its strongest pace of the 2016 event so far

Prior to the traditional Friday morning session, extended by 10 minutes from its usual hour this year, Ganassi had not topped any of practice and failed to get any of its four entries into the nine-car pole shootout.

But in the last session before Sunday's race, Kanaan set the pace with a 226.280mph lap, while his reigning IndyCar champion team-mate Scott Dixon was third.

Dixon will be Ganassi's highest starter on Sunday, having qualified 13th, with Kanaan 18th on the grid.

The Chevrolet-powered pair sandwiched Andretti Autosport's Carlos Munoz on Friday, Kanaan jumping ahead late on after a lengthy spell in first place for Munoz.

Andretti was Honda's lead contender, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Alexander Rossi backing Munoz up with fifth and sixth behind early pacesetter Will Power in the best Penske Dallara-Chevrolet.

Poleman James Hinchcliffe was 12th fastest, with second-place qualifier Josef Newgarden 17th. Hunter-Reay will join them on the front row.

The session was interrupted by one crash, when Pippa Mann backed her Dale Coyne Racing entry into the Turn 4 wall late on. She was unhurt.
