Watt targets Honda drive in European series

Jason Watt is likely to race in next year's FIA European Super Touring series, after his chances of a British Touring Car Championship drive took a dive this week

The ex-Formula 3000 star, paralysed from the waist down in a motorbike accident last year, has been looking at contesting the BTCC for some time. His best chance of a seat there was dashed this week, however, when Peugeot - for whom he won a brace of Danish Touring Car races this year - announced three British drivers.

Now it appears his best chance lies with JAS Engineering, which ran him in the Class One International Touring Car series in 1996, and its European campaign with last year's BTCC Honda Accords.

"They're going to run two cars for Gabriele Tarquini and Peter Kox, but they have three 2000-spec machines altogether on their hands," said Watt. "I have had talks with them and they say they'd love to run me in the third car. Obviously it all comes down to funding in the end, but if we can find it between us, then I'll be doing that. That's what I'm hoping for at the moment. My results weren't so good with JAS before [in '96], but they knew what machinery I had at my disposal, so they were still impressed with what I did."

The Dane hopes to confirm a deal in the new year but, until he puts pen to paper, he will also keep a close eye on developments in the BTCC: "I'm still keen on racing in the UK again. Obviously the series isn't as good as it used to be at the moment, but I think it will be good again soon. It would be good to be in it from the start."

Watt also drove a Panoz sportscar on a couple of occasions this season which, like his Danish Peugeot 306, was fitted with special hand controls.
