F1 testing: Same day, different circuits
Formula 1 testing kicked off this morning under sunny skies and in warm conditions at two different venues in Spain. The Michelin and Bridgestone teams have separated in their quest to find the upper hand
Michelin-shod teams Benetton, Williams, Jaguar and Prost continue running at Barcelona today. Benetton will hope for a repeat of the pace that saw Giancarlo Fisichella dip under Michael Schumacher's pole time for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Jaguar, meanwhile, are also buoyant as Eddie Irvine eclipsed his Spanish GP qualifying time by half a second yesterday, and looked strong until technical problems halted his running which restricted him to third quickest time behind Ralf Schumacher's Williams. The Milton Keynes squad also has test driver Tomas Scheckter and German F3 ace Andre Lotterer on hand.
Prost will test Red Bull F3000 star Enrique Bernoldi today, alongside its confirmed 2001 driver Jean Alesi, as it searches for a replacement for Nick Heidfeld. The Brazilian will hand over to Spanish Champ Car star Oriol Servia tomorrow.
In Valencia, 200 miles to the south, the Bridgestone teams will do battle. McLaren fields David Coulthard and Alexander Wurz, Ferrari has Rubens Barrichello in the hot seat, Jordan has both Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Ricardo Zonta in situ, and Arrows will run Jos Verstappen today and tomorrow, with Pedro de la Rosa taking over on Friday.
