Donington to host British round

Donington has won the race to host Britain's round of the American Le Mans Series in 2001

The Leicestershire circuit has taken the April 14th date in the calendar, which was announced in September of this year, despite opposition from Silverstone and Brands Hatch. The round will count for both the American and European series, and will feature works cars from Audi and Panoz.

"I am delighted that such a prestigious championship as this one will be coming to Donington Park," said Robert Fearnall, the circuit's Chief Executive. "The Easter weekend race will be one of the highlights of the year."

There will be five races in Europe within the European Le Mans Series calendar, and the British round will be the first of those. The second European race will be on May 20th at Jarama, following on from the pre-qualifying weekend for the Le Mans 24 Hour race.

"It was really important to us to have a race in Britain as historically there is a strong and enthusiastic following for sports cars there," said Don Panoz, the founder of the American and European Le Mans Series. "Donington has some superb facilities on offer and I'm sure they will put on a great show for everyone."

Practice and qualifying for the 2 hour 45 minute race will be on Friday, April 13th and the race will be held on Saturday, April 14th.
