Audi increases production on new R8 GT3 racer due to high demand

Audi has increased production of its new R8 GT3 racer and will deliver more than 50 cars to customers prior to the start of the season

A pre-season run of 45 of the second-generation R8 LMSs was planned, but that figure has been increased through additional demand for the V10-powered car.

Audi is not putting an exact figure on the final production run, but has stated that it will be over 50.

Audi marketing boss Dietmar Voggenreiter said: "We have found that demand outstrips production capacity.

"We are sorry on one hand that we won't be able to cater for all teams, but on the other it shows the appeal of the R8 LMS."

Romolo Liebchen, head of customer racing at Audi Sport, told Autosport: "It is hard to say exactly how many we will build, but we can say the number will be over 50 and we could deliver all of them by March."

The first two customer R8 LMS GT3s competed in the GT World Cup in Macau earlier this month in the hands of Audi Hong Kong and the Absolute Racing teams.

The Audi Hong Kong car, again run by the German Phoenix team, will be joined by a further three customer cars in the Sepang 12 Hours next month.

Phoenix will run one under its own banner in addition to the Hong Kong car, while the Belgian squad will also field two.

The official Audi entries for the World Cup from Phoenix and WRT, raced by Edoardo Mortara and Rene Rast respectively, were factory development cars.

The new R8 retails at €359,000 (£253,000) plus taxes.
