With the final stage of Leg One finished, Richard Burns has closed to within 56 seconds of the lead of Rally GB and finishes the day in fifth place. Burns has fought back brilliantly from this morning's disastrous start, when the Englishman lost almost a minute with suspension problems, to claw back almost 25 seconds from the gap to title rival Gronholm.
The Finn however remains in a comfortable second place behind McRae with Carlos Sainz more than 30s behind in third position. Burns will need to put in a mammoth effort if he is to swing the odds firmly back in his favour.
Of the eight stages run so far, five different drivers have set fastest stage times. World championship leader Marcus Gronholm heads the list with three, followed by McRae with two and Burns, Petter Solberg and Juha Kankkunen with one a piece.
At the end of the first leg there have been 12 retirements, only two of which have been due to accidents. The remaining 10 were mechanical failures.
