SS5: Gronholm moves up a gear
Richard Burns has slipped further behind the Rally GB leaders on SS5 and while the Subaru driver is holding 11th place, he is now 1m06s behind. The Brit's championship hopes have taken a further downturn as main rival Gronholm has taken his third stage win of the day to move ahead of Colin McRae in the overall standings. After a cautious start, world championship leader Gronholm has moved into top gear to take the fastest times on the last three stages and is now six seconds ahead of Colin McRae at the top of the standings.
Tommi Makkinen is a further 18 seconds behind McRae in third place followed by Didier Auriol in fourth, driving for SEAT in the Spanish manufacturers final World Rally event.
Gronholm is simply not prepared to settle for a points finish in Wales this weekend! The Finn set a blistering pace on SS5 to surge into the rally lead, helped by Burns, McRae and Carlos Sainz all spinning in the treacherous conditions.
Burns may believe there is a long way to go, but the signs are already not good that he can reach Sunday afternoon in the lead with Gronholm outside the top five.
Subaru is not having a very good Rally GB. Of the four Prodrive-run Imprezas competing on the event, Juha Kankkunen is in the highest position in seventh spot.
