SS4: Burns in further trouble

Richard Burns chances of stopping Marcus Gronholm's World Championship bid hit trouble 3kms into today's first stage when the Subaru star damaged his rear suspension. With the wheel way out of line he limped through the stage and dropped to 20th overall, 30 seconds behind the leaders.

The problem was partially fixed at the roadside after the stage and Burns completed SS3 with only a small time loss but on the 26km SS4 before the sanctuary of service he lost a further 30 seconds.

SS2 saw the demise of the hapless Belgian Mitsubishi driver, Freddy Loix, who crashed out of the event just 1km from the end of the stage.

Burns' team mate Petter Solberg set fastest time on SS2 to take the rally lead but then spun on the next and got stuck for three minutes before he could get going again.

Reports are coming in that Burns suspension problems were due to the Brit hitting a pile of logs on the first stage of the day.

World Rally veteran Kenneth Eriksson is believed to have dropped out of what could be the Finn's last world championship event with a blown engine. The 44-year-old has yet to re-sign for the Hyundai team for next year.
