Bookies predict Battle of Britain in Rally GB

British bookmaker Ladbrokes is predicting a two-way battle for victory in next weekend's Rally GB - with Englishman Richard Burns just edging it as pre-event favourite from Scotland's Colin McRae

Subaru's Burns is 6/4 to win the event, with McRae in the Ford just behind at 2/1.

Motivation will not be a problem for Burns as he aims for his third consecutive Rally GB victory - he needs to win in Wales to have any chance of taking the World Championship. He's currently lying nine points behind Marcus Gronholm in the standings so the Englishman has to win and hope that Gronholm finishes sixth or lower.

Gronholm is 4/1 to win, while outgoing World Champion Tommi Makinen is 8/1.

Of the other likely contenders, Carlos Sainz probably has the best odds from a punter's point of view. He is currently 12/1 to win, and unlike Francois Delecour in the Peugeot and Subaru's Juha Kankkunen, Sainz does not have a team mate gunning for the championship that he would have to defer to.

R. Burns 6/4
C. McRae 2/1
M. Gronholm 4/1
T. Makinen 8/1
C. Sainz 12/1
F. Delecour 16/1
J. Kankkunen 16/1
