New Alfa-based prototype tests in Spain

The company behind the successful Formula Nissan series is targeting Europe's leading car manufacturers to join its new silhouette touring car championship based in Spain, which it believes will offer the best value for money in Europe

The prototype Maxi-Touring Car, featuring an Alfa Romeo 156 body, has been testing recently at Jarama, near Madrid. Newly-crowned Formula Nissan champion Antonio Garcia has been one of the drivers to sample the car.

The identical single-seater, mid-engined chassis are built by Coloni in Italy and will feature 3-litre V6 engines derived from a model within the range of each brand. Air restrictors will be used to regulate the power outputs to a tolerance of 3bhp between each engine.

The carbonfibre body features an adjustable rear spoiler and rear diffusor, and the tubular steel chassis features pushrod suspension and weighs-in at 850kg.

"We are aiming at manufacturers such as SEAT, Opel, BMW and Mercedes," said a spokesman for RPM, the series organisers. "Now the car has run, we are waiting to hear what they have to say."

Depending on suitable manufacturer interest, the Spanish-based series is planned to kick off in 2001.
