Hungary GP2: Williams F1 junior Alex Lynn takes maiden pole

Williams Formula 1 development driver Alex Lynn claimed his maiden GP2 pole position at the Hungaroring by edging out McLaren protege Stoffel Vandoorne

DAMS driver Lynn was down in eighth before he set the pace on his second set of soft tyres.

With a clear track, the Brit set a time of 1m28.022s to go just 0.019 seconds clear of Vandoorne, who topped the timesheets in the early stages.

ART Grand Prix's Vandoorne tried his best to improve but struggled to find any clear track as the majority of the field jostled for position on their final runs, meaning the Belgian had to settle for second.

Like Lynn, Campos Racing driver Arthur Pic made use of a clear track to pip Ferrari junior Raffaele Marciello to third, with Pierre Gasly a tenth behind the Italian in fifth.

Racing Engineering's Jordan King improved late on to climb up the order and take sixth ahead of Pic's team-mate Rio Haryanto and Russian Time's Mitch Evans.

Silverstone feature race winner Sergey Sirotkin was less than a tenth behind Evans in ninth with Hilmer Motorsport's Nick Yelloly rounding out the top 10.

On his return to the series with MP Motorsport, Nicholas Latifi improved on his practice outing with a solid performance to qualify 12th, while fellow Formula Renault 3.5 regular Sean Gelael struggled down in 24th.
