Burns: Fuel crisis could ruin Rally GB
Richard Burns says that cancelling the Rally GB because of a fuel crisis would be a "desperate situation"
The next planned blockade in protest at fuel prices is scheduled for just prior to Britain's round of the world championship, and Burns is one of four title hopefuls who could see their ambitions dashed if the rally was scrapped.
Burns said: "I don't know enough about the situation to comment on the politics, but I'm sure everyone at the Motor Sports Association and the FIA will do all they can to ensure the last round takes place. It would be a fairly desperate situation if it is cancelled, although it does depend how we come out of Australia. In some ways, it could be disastrous or it could be fantastic!"
Ford's motorsport boss Martin Whitaker echoed Burns' concerns. "I think it's best to leave this to the government," he said.
The Silverstone finale of the British Touring Car Championship narrowly escaped cancellation due to the first petrol crisis in September, but, in spite of reduced crowds, adequate fuel supplies within the track ensured proceedings went ahead without disruption.
