Lausitz DTM: Tom Blomqvist leads practice for BMW

BMW rookie Tom Blomqvist led the way in first practice for this weekend's second round of the DTM season at the Lausitzring

Audi dominated the bulk of the 45-minute session, held in overcast conditions, and entered the final 10 minutes with its drivers occupying the top six positions.

Inside the final five minutes, though, Blomqvist and reigning champion Marco Wittmann leapt up the timesheets.

Blomqvist unseated Hockenheim Sunday winner Mattias Ekstrom with a lap of 1m18.145s to end the session on top, 0.197 seconds clear of the Swede.

Wittmann took third, a further 0.013s behind, as Audi drivers Jamie Green, Mike Rockenfeller, Edoardo Mortara and Timo Scheider filed fourth through to seventh.

Maxime Martin was eighth in his BMW, ahead of the best of the Mercedes runners, Robert Wickens.

The Lausitzring has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Mercedes, claiming eight wins at the circuit since 2005, but this year's visit started quietly.

Behind Wickens, Daniel Juncadella was the next best C-Coupe in 11th, with the remaining drivers anchored in the bottom third.

Gary Paffett fared worst of all, unable to turn a lap due to a fuel system problem that limited his Friday participation to the day's eventful press conference.
