Indy 500 Carb Day: Will Power tops final practice session
Reigning IndyCar champion Will Power claimed Carb Day honours by setting the fastest lap in the final practice session ahead of Sunday's Indianapolis 500
The Penske driver moved into P1 just over halfway into the hour-long session, and his 229.020 speed held until the end.
"We were pretty set on what we were going to run," Power said. "We just made little changes; did pitstop practice; practiced coming into the pits off [Turn] 4, just getting into a groove for the race."
Until Power produced his lap it had been left to Ganassi to set the pace, and the team still finished the morning with polesitter Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan sitting in P2 and P3 respectively.
Takuma Sato made a late jump to establish himself as the fastest of the Hondas at 228.242mph; the Foyt driver slotting into P5 just behind Simon Pagenaud.
It was a busy if uneventful session: cars ran in large packs to practice drafting, but the only interruptions were three brief spells under yellows for track inspections.
Tristan Vautier, who received an 11th-hour call-up to replace Carlos Huertas at Coyne, settled in quickly and finished the day 18th-fastest.
Just a few places ahead of him was Juan Pablo Montoya, who was forced to miss most of the session to a boost problem but made it out in time to reel off a 226mph lap in the final minutes.
