Gavin signs Saleen deal

Former British Formula 3 Champion Oliver Gavin has signed to drive the all-new Saleen S7 sportscar in next year's American Le Mans Series championship

The deal was announced on Friday at the British Motor Show and includes drives at the prestigious Daytona and Le Mans 24 hour races next year. Gavin will be partnered at the Speedlab factory team by Grand-Am champions Terry Borcheller and Ron Johnson and former Trans-Am star Tommy Kendall.

Gavin made the switch from single-seaters to sportscars this year and has been competing in the Grand-Am and ALMS championships in an Intersport Lola. The 28-year old scored a second place finish in the Grand-Am finale at Watkins Glen.

"We were really impressed with Oliver's speed at Trois-Rivieres and the Glen [during the Grand-Am championship races]," said team boss Steve Saleen. "We checked his credentials with our European sources and we knew we had the perfect compliment to our current Speedlab drivers."

The Ray Mallock Limited-built Saleen made its race debut at Laguna Seca earlier this month and proved to be competitive against its GTS class rivals. Gavin will have his first chance to drive the rear-engined S7 when testing begins in two weeks time near the Saleen base in California.
