WRC Rally Argentina: Kris Meeke takes large lead into Saturday

Kris Meeke holds a comfortable lead after the first full day of Rally Argentina, with only eight World Rally Cars still in the event

Meeke increased his gap to second placed man Jari-Matti Latvala on the Agua de Oro to Ascochinga test, after the Finn had made inroads into the Northern Irishman's lead on the final stage of the morning.

The Citroen driver then matched his VW rival's times through the first two splits of the Villa Bustos-Tanti stage, before Latvala dropped time in the third thanks to a front differential issue.

With Latvala losing another half-minute to his problem on the superspecial that ended the day, Meeke goes into Saturday with an advantage of 1m08.4s.

His team-mate Mads Ostberg took over second place on the final stage thanks to Latvala's problems. He had a relatively quiet afternoon after his morning engine worries.

Hyundai's Dani Sordo is half a minute behind Latvala in fourth, having cured a power steering issue in the afternoon. He subsequently topped the Villa de Merlo superspecial to finish the day.

Elfyn Evans continues his steady rally in fifth, ahead of Martin Prokop, who had a broken anti-roll bar for most of the afternoon.

Thierry Neuville is seventh, after a difficult morning including a puncture and punting Andreas Mikkelsen's limping Volkswagen in dust. Khalid Al Qassimi rounds out the WRC runners in eighth.

Sebastien Ogier was the highest profile loss during the day, as the reigning champion retired on the first stage with suspected engine trouble. He was soon joined by Volkswagen team-mate Mikkelsen, Hyundai's Haydon Paddon and Ott Tanak.

Tanak hit a rock in a watersplash on SS4, the second rally in a row the Estonian has ended up in water-related trouble after plunging into a reservoir in Mexico.
