Silverstone ELMS: Greaves keeps win as Lancaster escapes penalty

Greaves Motorsport has retained its Silverstone European Le Mans Series victory after stewards decided there was no reason to penalise Jon Lancaster for his late-race incident with Tristan Gommendy

The pair clashed coming onto the national straight with five minutes of the race remaining as both lapped a GT car while disputing the lead after Lancaster had reeled in Gommendy over the final half-hour.

Lancaster, driving the Greaves Gibson-Nissan 015S, went to the inside through the left hander, with Gommendy turning in on him.

Gommendy, in the TDS Racing ORECA-Nissan 05, spun and dropped down to third after light contact.

Lancaster then held off the Jota Sport Gibson of Harry Tincknell to win by less than four tenths of a second.

"We came past a GT car coming into it and he had a really bad exit with a lot of wheelspin and I had good traction because I still had a bit of tyre left," said Lancaster.

"There was a small gap, it was either lift or go alongside so I got halfway down the inside.

"He left a little bit of room, but not quite enough and I hit the inside kerb and just glanced him on the way out.

"I think his tyres were that far gone that any sort of contact was going to send him into a bit of a spin.

"It's unfortunate, but it's just a racing incident at the end of the day."

Gommendy criticised Lancaster for the manoeuvre on the basis that it is not possible to pass in this part of the track.

"From my side, it was pretty simple," said the Frenchman. "It's just a place where it is impossible to overtake.

"It's an interesting move. If we have the same spirit during the Le Mans race, I think we can have a big problem and a big injury and drivers in the walls."
