Barcelona F1 test: Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes better than in 2014

Lewis Hamilton believes Mercedes' rate of progress ahead of the 2015 Formula 1 season is better than it managed before its dominant campaign last year

Despite a troubled testing day at Barcelona on Thursday, which was cut short by an MGU-K problem, Hamilton believes there are huge positives to take out of the situation he is in right now.

"The team has been amazing," said the world champion. "The preparation and steps we have taken this year are even better than last year.

"We learned from last year and have applied that for this year.

"There are things we are learning on the way and we can improve I am sure.

"There are days we will improve, but the good thing is we are moving forward."

Hamilton only managed 48 laps on Thursday after the MGU-K failure.

Although it highlights that reliability remains a concern for the team, Hamilton was equally not too bothered by the situation.

"I don't really see it as being too much of a negative," he said.

"It is good you find these things, because you iron them out now and don't find them at the first race.

"But the more you drive, the more you feel comfortable. With the 50 laps I did today, I thought I am ready to go."

However, he admitted that the lost mileage of Thursday would have to be made up when he completes his final day of running on Saturday.

"I have one more day to hopefully have a clean day," he said. "If I can get 150 laps that would be great.

"I want to do lots of changes to pinpoint where I want to put the car for the first race.

"You want to just have all that knowledge in the bank so when we get to the first race, or the first few races, you can answer the problems you may face.

"It is down to one day now, but I think we will be fine."
