N'ring, race 2: Reuter's race, Schneider's title

Bernd Schneider sewed up the 2000 DTM for Mercedes with a fourth-place finish that guaranteed him the title, despite a lights-to-flag win for Opel's Manuel Reuter

Schneider had sat in second behind Reuter for the opening laps, but an over-ambitious lunge at the Merc by Reuter's stable mate Uwe Alzen at Castrol on lap 13 pushed him down to fifth - still good enough for the title - and Alzen to fourth. But with the bit between his teeth and something of a score to settle, Schneider passed Alzen for fourth on lap 16 and held his place to the finish, despite the odd peek from the Opel in the closing laps.

Reuter's double win brought the gap down from 59 points to Schneider pre-Nurburgring to just 44 post-'Ring, but with a maximum of only 40 points available at Hockenheim in three weeks time, that gave Schneider a second DTM title to add to the one he won with the Three-Pointed Star in 1995.

Behind Reuter it was all Merc: tin-top rookie Marcel Fassler took another second place finish, with Thomas Jager's third place easily his best result of the year.

Jo Winkelhock passed Alzen on the final lap to take fifth, while Laurent Aiello produced an impressive drive to put his Audi seventh, ahead of a gaggle of Mercs and Opels.

Best of the Brits was Peter Dumbreck in ninth. He'd enjoyed a dice with Darren Turner, before a slight mistake put Turner's Team Rosberg Merc down to 11th.
