Rally round-up: Sainz calls for safety improvements

Speaking after the Corsica Rally, the Spaniard reflected on his team mate Colin McRae's frightening accident where the Scot was trapped in his car for around half an hour.

"Rallying already has a permanent safety delegate (Jacek Bartos) to look after spectator safety and a technical delegate (Jacques Berger) to ensure that everyone builds cars that are within the rules. It is equally important that we should now have a medical person who attends every event to make sure that the safety of the competitors, and the treatment they receive if they have an accident like Colin, is of an equally high standard every time."

Sainz believes that McRae will be fit in time for San Remo. "The news about him is much more positive than it was yesterday and I'm sure he will be in San Remo. I certainly hope so because he is not only a friend and team mate but he is also a champion driver."



Peugeot boss Jean-Pierre Nicolas has insisted again that he will not name his team for next year until the end of November. "There are many options for us," he said. "We will not rush into a decision just because of this good result."

Possum Bourne clinched his fifth successive Australian championship in Tasmania this weekend. The Subaru driver beat Toyota's Neal Bates and Subaru's Brett Middleton to the crown while Cody Crocker (Subaru) won the Group N title. Bourne heads for Malaysia this coming weekend where he hopes to turn his lead in the FIA Asia-Pacific Championship into his third title. He won both the 1993 and 1994 series for Subaru.
