British Touring Car Championship poised to adjust rules for 2015

The British Touring Car Championship's success ballast system could be revised for next year

The series has run 45kg-36kg-27kg-18kg-9kg for the top five in the championship or previous race since the days of Super Touring.

But with NGTC machines being significantly heavier, the impact of the ballast has been reduced. Jason Plato and Colin Turkington led the way at the recent Silverstone round despite being the heaviest hit.

Motorbase team manager Oly Collins is one of those who believes a change is needed.

"It's much different putting 45kg in one of these [NGTC] cars than S2000," he said.

"The turbos have more torque. It doesn't affect the cars as much, but it does take the edge off."

Series boss Alan Gow supports the idea of higher weight penalties.

"I've been saying for a while that we should look at increasing the success ballast," he said.

"The proportion of the success ballast to the weight of the car is much less [due to the extra weight of the NGTC] and we need to bring that back."

Some suggested extra weight could cause issues with the cars and tyres, but Gow believes both can cope.

"It's not a problem," he added. "The car and tyre are well under [their limits]."

Gow also hinted there could be changes to the turbo boost equalisation, including dropping the adjustments - based on laptime - before each event.

"I don't want the boost adjustment," he said. "Before this season the teams wanted to keep it. I'm all for setting the levels and using those."

There is also a chance cars will be allowed to run different levels of turbo boost in different gears in order to even-out torque variations.
