Red Bull junior Pierre Gasly joins Caterham for remainder of 2014 GP2

Red Bull junior racer Pierre Gasly will complete the rest of the GP2 season with Caterham alongside his Formula Renault 3.5 campaign, starting with this weekend's Monza round

The French teenager, who won last year's Formula Renault Eurocup title and sits third in the FR3.5 standings, will replace Tom Dillmann alongside Rio Haryanto for the rounds in Italian, Russian and Abu Dhabi rounds.

The deal was put together between Red Bull's Helmut Marko and Caterham, with Gasly discovering last week that he would be racing on the Formula 1 support bill at Monza.

"Dr Marko called me to tell me the news, and I was happy," Gasly told AUTOSPORT. "It's a great opportunity.

"I'm excited to race with Formula 1 and in a new series. I'm quite lucky to be in this situation."

Gasly said that his programme for 2015 is not decided yet, but the three GP2 rounds could prove to be useful preparation if Red Bull decides to move him across from FR3.5 for next year.

"I don't know what I am doing next year, but this way I will have good experience of GP2," he added.

"If I have to do GP2 then it will be good preparation. We will see what happens next year, but this could be a great opportunity."

Gasly insists that his FR3.5 campaign with Arden, where he sits 54 points behind fellow Red Bull protégé Carlos Sainz in the standings with three double-header weekends to go, remains his priority for the rest of 2014.

"My aim is still to perform in World Series," he said. "So I will focus more on that, and then try to give my maximum in GP2.

"I want to keep in mind that the main thing is to finish the year in World Series well.

"I didn't do any simulator sessions or anything to prepare for GP2, so I think first I will try to understand the car and the tyres.

"I really don't know how it will be. I will push like usual and give my best, but I don't have any expectations.

"The aim for Monza will be to discover everything and we will see later what I can do."
