Ex-Formula 1 driver Heikki Kovalainen gets BMW DTM test

Heikki Kovalainen

Ex-Formula 1 driver Heikki Kovalainen is set to test a DTM car for BMW on Thursday.

BMW Motorsport is testing its M4 DTM at the Lausitzring between Monday and Thursday this week, with the Finn scheduled to get some time behind the wheel on the final day.

According to a BMW statement, it will be a chance for him to "gain an impression of the M4 DTM."

Kovalainen, 32, raced in 111 F1 grands prix for teams including Renault and McLaren, with which he won the 2008 Hungarian GP.

His last full season in F1 was with Caterham in 2012, before he raced in the last two races of the '13 season for Lotus, as a stand-in for Kimi Raikkonen after his countryman withdrew to undergo back surgery.

The BMW test will also include almost its entire DTM driving team, with Joey Hand the only regular driver who will not participate, the American missing out due to a scheduling conflict.

The team will focus on set-up, ahead of the eighth race of the 2014 DTM season, which will take place at the Lausitzring in the middle of next month.

The Brandenburg circuit could even be the site of BMW's second drivers' title win in three years, with Marco Wittmann going into the round with a 64-point lead over Audi drivers Mattias Ekstrom and Edoardo Mortara.
