WRC Rally Germany: Jari-Matti Latvala crash gives Kris Meeke lead
|Sunday, August 24th 2014, 06:27 GMT|
Jari-Matti Latvala crashed out of a commanding Rally Germany lead on Sunday morning, handing first place on the event to Kris Meeke.
Latvala had held an advantage of almost a minute over Meeke heading into the final four stages of the rally, and was firmly on course to make significant inroads into the World Rally Championship points lead of Volkswagen team-mate Sebastien Ogier, who had already retired from the rally following two crashes.
But, on the slippery opening stage of the final day, Latvala went off into the vineyards beyond the halfway point. Both he and co-driver Miikka Anttila are unhurt.
Latvala's crash means that Citroen driver Meeke now leads the rally by 8.4 seconds from Hyundai's Thierry Neuville. Both drivers have yet to win a round of the WRC.
It also means that Volkswagen's home rally will remain the only event on the WRC calendar that the team has not yet won, with Citroen now in with a chance of extending its dominant Rally Germany record.
