WRC Rally Germany: Kris Meeke's Citroen escapes road accident

Kris Meeke was involved in a road traffic accident on Saturday morning, and believes he is fortunate to still be in Rally Germany

The accident happened on the road section heading to the first running of the Panzerplatte stage.

Meeke's Citroen suffered damage on both sides.

The Northern Irishman stopped to talk to the police at the scene of the incident.

"We were approaching a roundabout and the police waved us past the traffic waiting to go into the roundabout," Meeke said.

"I pulled out at about 30km/h and saw a car coming up the road towards us. He was accelerating and not moving over.

"We slowed further and moved to the side - if we hadn't it would have been head-on.

"After the impact, I thought it was rally over for us. It was crazy.

"I don't know what the hell was on the guy's mind, but he hit us on the right side of the car which sent us into the cars which we were overtaking on the left.

"It was unbelievable. I have to say, it was actually quite scary to see somebody driving straight at you."

The damage to Meeke's car was superficial and he was able to continue in second place on the rally.
