Carl Edwards to leave Roush Fenway NASCAR Sprint Cup team

Roush Fenway Racing has announced that Carl Edwards will leave its NASCAR Sprint Cup team at the end of 2014

Edwards has spent his entire top-level career with Roush, having first joined it for a Truck campaign in 2003 before being promoted to its Cup squad halfway through the following season.

Roush revealed in May that it had signed 2011 Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne for a full-time Cup seat next year, but did not make clear whether Bayne would be an additional entry or a replacement for one of its existing drivers.

With Ricky Stenhouse Jr on a long-term contract and Greg Biffle indicating he planned to stay at RFR, speculation focused on Edwards looking elsewhere, with his exit confirmed prior to Sunday's Indianapolis race.

Team owner Jack Roush said: "I will always be thankful for Carl's contribution and the role he played in many Roush Fenway wins and championships.

"We wish him well for the future. In the meantime, we are excited about continuing our quest for a championship with Carl and the #99 team in 2014."

Edwards' career highlight so far is coming within a tiebreak of beating Tony Stewart to the 2011 Cup title. He currently holds a 2014 Chase slot by virtue of his wins at Bristol and Sonoma.

The 34-year-old has been linked to a new fourth Joe Gibbs Racing entry, alongside Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and fellow ex-Roush man Matt Kenseth.
