Indy Lights Freedom 100: Luiz Razia claims maiden oval pole

Luiz Razia takes Indianapolis Indy Lights pole 2014

Just two weeks after his pole-to-flag Indy Lights win on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, Luiz Razia secured pole position for Friday's Freedom 100 on the famed oval.

The Brazilian produced a two-lap average of 187.710mph to claim the top spot, just beating the 186.573mph effort from Schmidt team-mate Jack Harvey.

"It's good to be on the pole, especially at a place like this and especially since ovals are a new discipline for me," said Razia.

"Tomorrow is big - I've watched the past five years of races here, so I know I just need to get a good car in traffic and see if I can play for the last five laps."

Harvey admitted that he had no answer for his stablemate's qualifying speed, but said that he feels good about his chances for the Friday.

"I was a little bit down [on Razia's pace], but our focus has always been the race so I'm pretty happy with the speed we did," said the Brit.

Matthew Brabham and points leader Zach Veach rounded out the top four.
