Kansas NASCAR: Kevin Harvick snatches pole
Kevin Havick stole the show with a new lap record in NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying at Kansas Speedway
Harvick edged out the early benchmark set by Joey Logano with just over a minute left on the clock, and the ensuing chaos as rivals scrambled to get on track to better the Stewart-Haas man's time ruined a number of drivers' laps. Harvick's time of 27.799s would not be beaten for the remainder of the session.
Harvick took pole postion, most laps led and a win the last time he visited Kansas in the Cup series in the 2013 Chase race last October.
Brad Keselowski, who was criticised by some peers after causing a big crash while trying to un-lap himself at Talladega last week, followed Penske team-mate Logano in third.
Carl Edwards rounded out the top five, followed by Kyle Larson, who had topped the first practice session earlier in the day, and Kurt Busch who dominated Q1 and Q2 before fading in the all important five-minute Q3 shootout.
Points leader Jeff Gordon narrowly missed out on the final qualifying session in 13th place, just ahead of Hendrick team-mate Jimmie Johnson.
Two of the three previous polesitters for this event, AJ Allmendinger and Matt Kenseth, were knocked out in Q1 and line up 29th and 28th respectively.
