Ecclestone: Silverstone 'needs pulling down'
Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says that Silverstone, the current venue for the British Grand Prix, "needs pulling down and rebuilding."
Speaking on ITV before the Italian Grand Prix, Ecclestone appeared to back Donington Park to be the new venue for the race from 2002 and said he believed that Brands Hatch's ongoing planning permission issues had ruled the Kent track out as a venue.
"Silverstone's a bit like an old house," said Ecclestone. "It needs pulling down and rebuilding, not just painting. With Silverstone we should have the best track in the world, but instead we have the worst."
BHL, the owners of Brands Hatch, hold the rights to hold the British Grand Prix from 2002 onwards. Should its application for planning permission be turned down by the secretary of state for the environment, John Prescott, it is expected to lease the race out to Donington Park.
Speaking of Donington Park's plans for renovating the Leicestershire venue, Ecclestone said: "If they do what they say, it will be fantastic."
