JR Hildebrand secures Indy 500 drive with Ed Carpenter Racing

Hildebrand secures Indy 500 drive

JR Hildebrand has secured a ride for the Indianapolis 500 after being confirmed as driver of a second Ed Carpenter Racing entry.

Hildebrand, who finished second to Dan Wheldon at Indy in 2011, has been out of a full-time drive since splitting with Panther Racing mid-way through last year.

He said that he was excited by ECR's potential.

"Ed's team has been very strong on the ovals for the past two years, including winning at Fontana and taking pole at last year's [Indy] 500," he said.

"Working with Ed and his staff at Indy gives me a lot of confidence going into the world's biggest race."

Team owner Ed Carpenter, who will drive the team's lead car at all oval races during 2014 including Indy, said that he expects Hildebrand's input to make the entire team stronger.

"JR has been the Indy 500 rookie of the year and an Indy Lights champion, so his credentials are very impressive," he said.

"We believe a second car at Indy will assist us in preparing a strong performance in this year's Indy 500."

Hildebrand will drive the #21 entry.
