Sebring 12 Hours: Extreme Speed HPD leads at half-distance
The Extreme Speed Motorsports HPD squad led the Sebring 12 Hours under the safety car at half distance
ESM HPD ARX-03b driver Ryan Dalziel leapfrogged the Action Express Coyote-Chevrolet Corvette DP when all the leading contenders pitted after the yellow flags came out for the eighth time in the race just before the six-hour mark.
ESM was able to turn around Dalziel, who shares his HPD with Scott Sharp and David Brabham, quicker than the Action Express team could replace Sebastien Bourdais with Christian Fittipaldi during the stops.
The OAK Racing Morgan-Nissan LMP2 held third place in Alex Brundle's hands, with the best of the Chip Ganassi Racing Riley-Ford EcoBoost DPs in fourth with Tony Kanaan behind the wheel.
The GT Le Mans class was led by the factory CORE Autosport Porsche 911 RSR shared by Jorg Bergmeister, Pat Long and Michael Christensen from the Rahal BMW Z4 driven by Andy Priaulx, Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand.
CORE Autosport was also ahead in the Prototype Challenge class with its ORECA-Chevrolet FLM09 shared by Colin Braun, James Gue and Jon Bennett.
Ferrari led the way in the GTD Daytona class with Scuderia Corse entry driven by Alessandro Balzan, Kyle Marcelli, Lorenzo Case and Jeff Westphal.
The safety car came out when Gaston Kerby spun his BAR1 Motorsports entry at Turn 16 and drove into Alex Tagliani in one of the RSR Racing ORECAs.
Both drivers were evaluated in the circuit medical centre and subsequently released.
More than three of the first six hours had been run behind the safety car after a series of incidents.
The most serious, also involving two PC cars, resulted in the race being briefly red flagged courtesy of debris on the circuit.
