Laurens Vanthoor to make Le Mans debut with Sebastien Loeb Racing

Laurens Vanthoor

Reigning FIA GT Series champion Laurens Vanthoor will make his Le Mans 24 Hours debut with the Sebastien Loeb Racing LMP2 squad in June.

The 22-year-old Belgian, who won the 2013 FIA GT title with former Le Mans winner Stephane Ortelli, will join fellow WRT Audi driver Rene Rast in the Loeb team's ORECA-Nissan 03 for the World Endurance Championship blue-riband event.

Vanthoor said: "Since I have been a GT driver, I have taken part in several endurance races, like Spa and the Nurburgring [24 Hours], but Le Mans is even bigger.

"Participating in this race has been one of my objectives. I have been working for it for several years and I am happy to now achieve it."

Loeb team manger Dominique Heintz explained that Vanthoor had the "perfect profile" for the squad's maiden Le Mans assault.

"Laurens's performances have not gone unnoticed these last couple of years and we clearly observed them last year when fighting against him in the FIA GT Series," he said.

"He is young, talented and ambitious and just like Rene, he embodies the team's values.

"They know each other quite well, they both have an experience of 24-hour races, and they have been team-mates before. Those were important factors for us."

The team has yet to announce the mandatory silver-rated driver who will join Vanthoor and Rast in the ORECA at Le Mans.

Vanthoor and Rast are expected to be confirmed with the WRT Audi team this week for campaigns on the Blancpain Endurance and Blancpain Sprint series.
