Daytona 500: Ricky Stenhouse Jr tops rain-affected Friday practice

Ricky Stenhouse Jr set the pace on a rain-shortened NASCAR Sprint Cup practice day for the Daytona 500.

The Roush Fenway driver posted the fastest lap when he reached 197.027mph during the early stages of first practice.

He topped the timesheets while running in a five-car draft and his speed remained unmatched for the majority of the session, which was abandoned 20 minutes before the end due to rain showers.

Team-mate Greg Biffle was second quickest before the rain arrived - having achieved 196.954mph - followed by Danica Patrick, David Ragan and series returnee Tony Stewart.

NASCAR's revamp: madness or genius?

With the weather forecast showing no further improvements for the remainder of the day, the second session was subsequently cancelled.

Twenty-nine of the 43 drivers due to start the 500-mile Cup opener participated in the first, with one notable omission being Martin Truex Jr.

He failed to run at all on Friday after he was involved in a multi-car crash in the second of Thursday's Duel qualifying races.

The Furniture Row racer has been forced to switch to a back-up car, which has cost him his front row grid spot for Sunday.
