British Touring Car Championship history gets ITV series

Frank Gardner, Oulton Park BTCC, 1967

The history of the British Touring Car Championship will be covered by a special series on ITV4 this month.

Touring Car Legends is a three-part documentary series by Gaucho Productions and covers the BTCC from its 1950s origins to the present day.

The first one-hour episode is aired at 8pm tonight, narrated by former BTCC racer Tiff Needell.

It features interviews with a number of key figures, including John Cleland, Tim Harvey, Murray Walker, Andy Rouse, Win Percy, Jack Sears and Steve Neal.

Series director Alistair Weaver said: "My passion for cars stems from watching the Ford RS500s in the BTCC in the late 1980s. Doing this documentary was a bit of a labour of love.

"One of the biggest challenges we faced was sourcing the footage. It wasn't until the late 1980s that the BTCC was televised consistently but we've managed to unearth some wonderful stuff from the '60s and '70s too."
