Formula Renault team Scorpio weighs up 2014 British Formula 3 entry

Long-time Formula Renault team Scorpio Motorsport is eyeing an expansion into the British Formula 3 International Series this season.

The Leicestershire squad is in the early stages of negotiations with drivers for what would be its first appearance at F3 level.

Team boss Jon Pettitt said: "It's very much a work in progress, but we really hope it comes off.

"We initially looked at European F3 Open, but the drivers were a little short of budget so British F3 became a possibility.

"I don't want to compete in F3 unless we feel that we can take on the likes of Carlin and Fortec and so on, which is no mean feat."

Scorpio has yet to make up its mind whether it will plump for the current Dallara F312 model or older-generation F308, which will compete alongside each other in British F3's top class.

As far as engines are concerned, Pettitt said that Scorpio is "leaning towards Volkswagen".

The team will continue to compete in Formula Renault BARC, in which it won the last two rounds of the 2013 season with Ivan Taranov.

Scorpio also won races in Formula Renault UK.
