Memo Gidley has undergone further surgery to assist in his recovery from injuries sustained in a huge crash early in last weekend's Daytona 24 Hours.
Gidley suffered a broken back when his GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Riley-Chevrolet hit the Risi Competizione Ferrari of Matteo Malucelli in the third hour of the race.
He underwent initial surgery on his left leg and arm that evening, and his team announced the second phase of surgery, this time on his back, on Tuesday.
"Memo Gidley underwent surgery late yesterday to repair and stablise the fracture in his lower back," said a team statement.
"He continues to be monitored and evaluated at Halifax Health in Daytona Beach, Florida."
Malucelli spent Saturday night under observation in the same medical facility before being released and cleared to fly home.
