NASCAR plans radical Sprint Cup Chase format revamp for 2014

Homestead NASCAR Sprint Cup 2013

NASCAR is considering a radical overhaul of its points system that would place far more value on wins, and feature eliminations during the Chase.

According to the Charlotte Observer, the proposed plans would expand the Chase from 12 to 16 drivers, and a win in one of the opening 26 races would pay enough points to make a Chase position a near-certainty.

A countback system would be used in the event that there were more than 16 different winners.

Once the Chase positions had been finalised, eliminations would take place after the third, sixth and ninth races in the Chase, culminating in a winner-takes-all decider in the last race at Homestead.

The plans are not believed to have been finalised yet.

NASCAR is expected to make an announcement about the 2014 season's format before the end of the month.
