Dakar: Nani Roma extends leads as Orlando Terranova takes stage win

Nani Roma Dakar

Nani Roma extended his lead in the 2014 Dakar after stage 11, despite seeing fellow Mini driver Orlando Terranova take the stage victory.

Terranova finished the 605 kilometre stage across the Atacama Desert, from Antofagasta to El Salvador, 10 minutes and 57 seconds clear of Roma.

But the victory made little impact on the standings because Terranova remains more than one hour adrift of his Spanish rival in the standings.

Roma's main focus was instead on his closest overall challenger Stephane Peterhansel, who was less than two minutes behind him at the start of the day.

Peterhansel's hopes of overhauling his rival were dashed, however, after his Mini bosses ordered him not to take risks and push for the lead.

The Frenchman ended the day's stage with the fourth fastest time behind Toyota's Giniel de Villiers - who was the leading non-Mini driver.

The result means that Roma now holds a five minutes and 32 seconds lead over Peterhansel, with third place Nasser Al-Attiyah a further 50 minutes adrift.

Al-Attiyah, who had won on Wednesday, led the early running of stage 11 but lost 20 minutes with an unspecified car problem shortly after checkpoint six.
