Justin Wilson's recovery from crash injuries ahead of schedule

Justin Wilson is recovering quicker than initially expected from injuries sustained in a crash during the IndyCar season finale at Fontana in October

Wilson suffered a small pulmonary contusion and three non-operable pelvic fractures when his car spun and was T-boned by Tristan Vautier.

Although he was released from hospital after a couple of days, some early prognosis indicated that he might not be able to put weight on his legs until after Christmas.

However the Brit told AUTOSPORT that the healing process has been progressing exceptionally well.

"The fractures are close to being fully healed," he said. "I feel totally normal; I've just got a bit of discomfort in some of the extreme movements, but otherwise I'm feeling good.

"I'm walking around, and I'm even getting on the bike. It's a stationary bike, but still, I'm please with how it's going and can't wait to get back in the car.

"I think it's healing a bit quicker than they thought, but it depends who you speak to. Some doctors say 'oh, it will take 12 weeks to heal', and then another one will say, 'in about six weeks you'll be able to put weight on it', which is what happened. It just depends.

"But I saw a very experienced doctor here in Colorado who has seen his fair share of injured hips and knees and things like that so I trust him, and he said, 'you're not going to break it again by getting up and walking, so let the pain be the limit and do as much as you can'."

Wilson, who finished sixth in this year's championship, is one of several drivers whose 2014 plans remain unconfirmed.

Dale Coyne Racing holds an option on his services for next year, although AUTOSPORT understands that at least one other team is monitoring his availability.
