The first version of Volkswagen's brand-new Formula 3 engine ran for the first time on track at Silverstone on Monday.
Tom Blomqvist put the initial miles on the Spiess-built powerplant in a Carlin-run Dallara.
Team boss Trevor Carlin described the engine Blomqvist ran as "a prototype", and said that 2013 British F3 champion Jordan King will take over driving duties on Tuesday.
"It's gone all right," said Carlin. "We were just checking the installation and the new electronic system, and wanted to get that working properly.
"It's just a shakedown really. There are a few things to sort out tonight but apart from that it was pretty faultless."
AUTOSPORT understands that Blomqvist, who contested the F3 European Championship with EuroInternational this season, has moved into the frame for a seat with Carlin in 2014.
"There's nothing at the moment," said Carlin, "but he's a good driver and would be a good guy to have in the team."
Carlin also ran regular 2013 driver Nicholas Latifi at Silverstone with the older-spec VW engine. The Canadian looks likely to continue with the squad next season.
