GT squad United Autosports aims for BTCC with James Cole

James Cole, United Toyota BTCC test, November 2013

GT squad United Autosports is hoping to move into the British Touring Car Championship next year after testing with James Cole.

UA, which narrowly missed out on the British GT title this year, ran an ex-Frank Wrathall Toyota Avensis at Donington Park last week.

Cole is likely to be one of the drivers, if UA can secure an entry under the championship's new regulations.

The 25-year-old completed half a season in the BTCC this year with a Team Hard Vauxhall Insignia.

Team boss Richard Dean told AUTOSPORT: "We bought the Wrathall car and we want to go to touring cars.

"We're out testing as we should be and we're serious about it. We're quite hopeful, but obviously nobody knows yet who will get an entry."

Dean confirmed the damp Donington test was part of the learning process for the team, which hopes to run two NGTC Toyotas in 2014.

"It was a day of getting James fitted in the car and us learning about it," he added.

"I'm hoping to get two cars and James could be one of the drivers."
