World Rallycross Championship set for Trois-Rivieres GP date

Rallycross

The new-for-2014 World Rallycross Championship is expected to include an event in Canada as part of the famous Trois-Rivieres Grand Prix.

Grown out of the European Rallycross Championship, the new world series must go outside of Europe twice in 2014.

Although yet to be confirmed, the Canadian event appears set to be the first of those two dates.

The rallycross event is expected to use a circuit that combines part of the Trois-Rivieres street course with newly constructed gravel sections.

First run in 1967, the Trois-Rivieres event has been headlined by categories including Indy Lights, Formula Atlantic, Can-Am, the American Le Mans Series and Trans-Am.

It is best known as the venue where Gilles Villeneuve first gained wider recognition after beating Formula 1 visitor James Hunt in the 1976 Atlantic race in the city.

The full 2014 World Rallycross calendar will be announced at next month's FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting.
