Macau WTCC: Gabriele Tarquini takes engine change, put to back of grid

Gabriele Tarquini WTCC 2013

Gabriele Tarquini's hopes of securing second in the 2013 World Touring Car Championship have been dealt a significant blow after Honda was forced to change his engine.

The Italian is not expected to make the start of race one in Macau, and will therefore be forced to start from the back of race two as a penalty for the change.

Tarquini is currently 25 points ahead of Tom Chilton in the fight for runner-up spot.

The Briton has endured his own troubles this weekend after a heavy crash in practice, but is due to start from seventh and fourth for Sunday's two races.

Honda discovered an engine fault with Tarquini's car in Sunday morning's warm-up session, and after lengthy debate decided it had no choice but to change engines.

There remains a faint hope for Tarquini however, should Honda be able to complete the change before the start of race one.

Because the grid has been declared final he would therefore be allowed to line up in third, with his engine change penalty still being applied to the second race.
