US GP: Button hit with grid penalty for overtaking under red

Jenson Button

Jenson Button has been hit with a three-place grid penalty for overtaking under red flag conditions during Friday morning practice for the United States Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver was found to have passed another car after the session was red-flagged because of a problem with the medical helicopter.

The incident happened just 14 minutes into the delayed session and has led to the 2009 world champion being punished under Appendix H, article 2.4.4.1 of the FIA International Sporting Code.

This states that when the red flag is shown "overtaking is forbidden and drivers should remember that race and service vehicles may be on the track, the circuit may be totally blocked because of an accident and weather conditions may have made the circuit undriveable at racing speed."

It is the first time Button has been hit with a grid penalty in 2013.
