US GP: Fernando Alonso passes final medical test at Austin

Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso has passed a final medical test at Austin and been declared fit to compete in this weekend's United States Grand Prix.

The Ferrari driver has been in back pain since bouncing across the kerbs in Abu Dhabi during a battle for position with Jean Eric-Vergne.

The impact - which was measured at 25G - required precautionary hospital checks on the evening of the race, and Alonso has had further examinations since then, although he always underlined that his participation in the Austin race was not in doubt.

FIA rules required Alonso to be checked over by doctors at Austin on Thursday.

Following a series of tests led by Steve Olvey at the track's medical centre, Alonso was given the all clear to race.

Although not taking any painkillers for his back, he has elected to skip media commitments at the track on Thursday and has instead chosen to return to his hotel to aid his recovery.
